This Thanksgiving, people across the United States will celebrate a holiday based on the myth of a shared meal between the Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) people and English settlers who would later violently displace and murder them.
CSPG’s Poster of the Week, by Ernesto Yerena, reminds us that our annual tradition of Thanksgiving is a cover for terrorism, genocide, and colonization that began more than 500 years ago. The historical reality is land dispossession, cultural genocide through forced assimilation, and slaughter of communities in the name of manifest destiny.
As we celebrate with loved ones this Thanksgiving it is important to remember the true cost of this holiday came at the expense of Indigenous peoples and bear witness to the ongoing struggles against genocide and imperialism throughout the US empire. Around the world, Indigenous people are continuing to resist and refusing to be erased.
