If images of Haitian immigrants being chased, grabbed, and whipped by mounted Border Patrol agents isn’t sufficiently horrific, Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R, Texas) defended the U.S. Border Patrol agents, saying that the agents were, "doing God's work fighting everything they can." Although other politicians—including Rep. Maxine Waters (D, California)—have expressed outrage over the response, the Biden administration continues to deport Haitians. Rather than reverse Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies as many had hoped, President Biden is escalating them. Three hundred twenty Haitians were deported this week, and thousands more will be deported over the next few weeks. This is happening just five weeks after the Department of Homeland Security extended temporary protected status because it is unsafe for asylum seekers to return to Haiti. Daniel Foote, the U.S. special envoy to Haiti, wrote a scathing resignation letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Not only does he protest the Biden administration’s mass deportation of Haitian asylum seekers, but he also castigates the U.S. for constantly meddling in Haiti’s political affairs. It looks like President Biden is taking on President Obama’s title of “Deporter-in-Chief.”
