Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from September 15th to October 16th. Its celebration begins on the 15th to align with the five countries celebrating independence from Spain on that date: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. The other countries whose heritage, history, tradition, and culture are celebrated during this time are Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.
With the presidential election less than 40 days away it is critically important to increase Hispanic voter turnout. For the first time ever, the largest minority group of eligible voters will be Latin Americans in the upcoming election. Yet, there are still major gaps in their voter registration due to restrictive voter ID requirements, limited Spanish language voter materials, extreme district gerrymandering, rampant online disinformation, and the lack of outreach to Hispanic voters by political campaigns.
The Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP)—which produced CSPG’s Poster of the Week—has been working since 1974 to mobilize and empower the Hispanic and Latino community throughout the U.S. SVREP popularized the motto: “¡Su voto es su voz!” (“Your vote is your voice!”). Let’s continue the efforts made by pioneers for change who have worked to make the more just and equitable.
